Waihee Stream Emergency Repairs (O’ahu)

The Waihee Stream Emergency Repairs project was completed for the City & County of Honolulu, Department of Design and Construction.

The main objective of this project was to upgrade the damaged existing streambank lining downstream of the Ahilama Road Bridge. This project required the use of rock-filled, polymer-coated galvanized wire-fabric gabions to be placed in the streambed as the means to support the damaged CRM slope lining.

Since this project involved in-water stream work, it required extreme sensitivity to the surrounding environment making adherence to a multitude of National, State, and County permits was essential. Koga Engineering & Construction Inc. coordinated thoroughly with the City & County of Honolulu, their environmental consultant WPS Inc., and the Koga team consisting of Belt Collins , AECOS Inc., Affiliated Construction, & Green Thumb Landscaping.

Koga used several methods, such as pre-fabricating gabions off-site, using smaller equipment on the roads, and using a crane out of the stream to place gabions along the streambed, to limit land disturbance and disruption to the adjacent neighborhoods.
