Ewa Villages R1 Replacement (O’ahu)

The Ewa Villages R-1 Replacement project was a Design-Build project with Sam O. Hirota Inc, for the City & County of Honolulu, Department of Facility Maintenance. The R-1 line was connected to an existing recycled water line behind Ka Makana Ali’I and continued east, crossing Kaloi Stream and running adjacent to Geiger Park.

The R-1 line traversed through many obstacles, such as a historical site (Varona Village), Kapolei Parkway and Kaloi Stream. In addition to these obstacles, the R-1 line was initially intended to run beneath the westbound lanes of Renton Road, which had numerous unforeseen utility lines.

Koga Engineering & Construction, Inc. overcame these obstacles and challenges with detailed coordination and communication between the City Department of Facility Management and all other relevant parties to design a solution.

Work was successfully completed with different innovative techniques, along with efforts to mitigate community/environmental impact. These tasks included: Having constant archeological monitoring, using suspended platforms to avoid working within Kaloi stream, using ground penetrating radar devices to locate existing reinforcing steel to avoid damaging the existing bridge and rerouting the R-1 line to the eastbound lanes to prevent utility conflicts.
